The system nobody notices until it fails — and then nothing else works either.
Communication is the nervous system of a live production. When the director calls for camera two, that instruction needs to reach the camera operator instantly. When a producer cues the anchor, the talent needs to hear it clearly. When the audio engineer asks the stage manager to adjust a microphone, that message needs to arrive without ambiguity.
All of this happens through the intercom system. It is the least glamorous piece of equipment in the control room and one of the most critical. A production can survive a minor graphics glitch or a brief routing issue. It cannot survive a communication breakdown between the control room and the field.
Types of Intercom Systems
Party Line (Two-Wire)
The simplest and most common system for small to mid-size productions. Everyone on a given channel hears everyone else. The director talks and all operators on that channel hear the message. It works like a conference call. Party line systems are affordable, easy to set up, and reliable. They are the standard for church productions, small TV stations, and portable flypack systems.
The limitation is that conversations are not private. If the director is giving notes to the camera operator, the audio engineer hears it too. In small crews this is manageable. In large productions with 15+ people on comms, party lines become noisy and distracting.
Matrix Intercom
A matrix system gives each user an independent panel with the ability to talk to any other user or group privately. The director can speak to camera one without the graphics operator hearing it. The producer can have a side conversation with the replay operator without interrupting the main channel. Matrix systems offer far more flexibility and cleaner communication but cost significantly more.
Major broadcast facilities, large sports productions, and network television use matrix intercom systems. They are the standard for any production with more than 8-10 people on communication.
IFB (Interruptible Foldback)
IFB is a dedicated audio feed that sends program audio to on-air talent along with the ability for the director or producer to interrupt and speak directly to the talent. The anchor hears the live program in their earpiece until the director breaks in with a cue. IFB is essential for any production with on-camera talent including news, sports sideline reporters, and remote interview guests.
Planning Your Communication Channels
Before selecting an intercom system, map out every communication path your production requires.
- Production channel: The main channel where the director calls shots. The TD, audio engineer, graphics operator, and camera operators all monitor this channel.
- Camera channel: A dedicated channel for camera-specific communication so the director can give framing instructions without cluttering the main production channel.
- Stage/floor channel: Connects the control room to the floor manager, stage hands, and anyone working in the studio or on the field.
- IFB channels: One channel per on-air talent position. Each talent hears program audio plus their own dedicated IFB for private cues.
- Engineering/technical channel: A separate channel for technical troubleshooting that does not interrupt production communication.
Count the total number of channels you need and then add 20-30% spare capacity. Productions always grow and adding channels after installation is more expensive than including them from the start.
The most common intercom mistake is undersizing the system. A production that starts with 4 channels and 8 belt packs will need 6 channels and 12 belt packs within a year. Buy for where you are going, not where you are today.
IP-Based Intercom
Modern intercom systems increasingly use IP networking rather than dedicated analog wiring. IP intercom offers several advantages: it runs over standard network infrastructure, it scales easily by adding software licenses rather than physical hardware, and it integrates naturally with REMI and remote production workflows where the control room and the venue are in different locations.
The trade-off is that IP intercom depends on network reliability and adds a small amount of latency compared to traditional wired systems. For most productions this latency is imperceptible. For the most demanding live environments, wired party line or matrix systems remain the gold standard.
